Green Space Design

Green space design has a critical role in shaping the way communities are able to connect with nature. In order to achieve the restorative effects of nature, green spaces must be designed in a way that can cater to and address our cognitive and emotional functions. Additionally, green spaces are critical places for retaining and enhancing biodiversity values and wildlife connectivity.

Emerging research on the important role of ‘messy’ attributes of green space design is not only proving to be key in supporting biodiversity values but is now also identified as being a critical attribute that can help improve our health and wellbeing. The value of nature connection opportunities whether it be within the home garden, street-scape or the broader community has many benefits. These benefits range from improvements to individual wellbeing (physical and mental health), improved liveability as a result of reduced pollution and heat stress, increased opportunities for social interactions with family and friends through to the biodiversity benefits, with increased habitat availability helping to enhance the abundance and variety of wildlife.

Our vision is to support holistic approaches where nature can become part of community everyday living, resulting in a wonderful array of social, economic and environmental benefits. Where we are exploring new approaches to share ideas, lessons and stories on green space design through facilitating the exchange of information and mentoring and valuing the importance of community knowledge as places of learning and teaching.
